P&S aim to establish a community led housing scheme in the East Riding of Yorkshire that contributes to the overall range and scope of housing provision within the region. Housing that meets the needs of its residents and benefits the local and wider community. We aim to create a housing complex that leaves a lasting legacy and provides an inspirational model to others.
There is a housing crisis in the UK. There is simply not enough good quality, affordable housing for the population. The cost of house purchase has risen and is simply too expensive for many. There has been a rise in the cost of rented accommodation and the private rented market has become smaller. The restrictions on the allowance for housing costs impacts many and the access to specialist housing advice has become more difficult. Housing provision does not match the demographical changes that have happened across the population over the last decades. There is a desperate shortage of social housing. Many people would like to live in a supportive community setting but there are few opportunities.
Economic challenges affect housing stability. When the cost of living rises or people lose income streams people are at risk of losing their homes with all of the associated problems that brings for individuals and families. Our project seeks to contribute to housing that is affordable and secure.
P&S has been supported by ERYC with a small start up grant in order to be able to launch a community led housing project. Community led housing projects involve a group of ordinary people, generally in the same local area, who identify a need for additional local housing and find opportunities to create it. The project is taken forward by those people who are in control of the project from inception to completion. Community led housing is a grassroots movement that is responsive to local housing needs and able to cater to those needs for a section of the community.
